City Slicker

Yes, I have a collection black leather that would make MJ (circa ‘I’m Bad’) proud. It includes a handful of skirts in various cuts and a range of chevron, snakeskin, and panel detailing. How much is enough? I say, more is more—especially if it’s more of what’s quintessentially you.

So, a few weeks back, when I decided to walk head first into clear and present danger a la the Rebecca Minkoff LA sample sale, I spotted this beauty immediately. And just like that, my new favorite skirt swiftly made its way into an outfit post. Note the unexpected asymmetrical cut, slimming paneling, deceptively office-appropriate hemline. A soon-to-be well-worn, day to night, office to happy hour staple.

These silver shoes are also going to get a lot of play this summer (as I try to will myself out of wearing those black ZARA sandals 24-7).

That’s a Wrap

Shirt Dress: T by Alexander Wang |  Jacket: H&M | Sweater: RIOT | Shoes: BCBG

This was a wholly make-shift outfit that turned out fun.

I owe the sweater to a new, dangerously close, devastatingly on-steez, neighbor: Suburban Riot. I wandered out of my lobby, into casual wear heaven, and emerged with the only horizontally striped item I have ever bought it my life. It’s mens, and it’s perfect. The lightweight varsity bomber jacket is a recent H&M steal; the shirtdress and boots are old favorites.

Had to Have: A Wardrobe of Bralettes

If you suspect that these tops are simply adding to what’s already threatening to become a wardrobe of bralettes—from leather to sateen—I wouldn’t necessarily accuse you of jumping to conclusions. And yet… you know you want them too:

1. Black Leather Bralet from Gypsum Style
2. White Leather Bralet from Gypsum Style
3. Black Crop Top from ASOS

Had to Have: Glam Sweats

I don’t really do trends. I tried a peplum shirt once. It has since lived in the back of my closet, a constant reminder that when it comes to clothes, anything not  somewhat an extension of my now established style (a typically inappropriate mix of legs, zippers, leather, streetwear, sheer, pant suits, and overdressing) will swiftly be met with neglect.

On the other hand, sometimes a trend so perfectly intersects with my aesthetic that post-blackout, trigger finger over “checkout,” an ASOS email notifies me that the above three pairs of glam sweats have been dispatched towards my doorstep. OOPS.

And for the record, this is how excited I am about trying to dress ever more like Rihanna.

This one time, I found myself in possession of a bike. I imagined I’d ride frequently and with abandon, push it past the utility of being the most functional gold-plated accessory I’ve ever owned. Then I looked in the mirror and came to grips: there’d be a time and place. Aside from pre-planned Santa Monica to Venice beach crusades, there was one other opportunity: the LA cyclists’ own CicLAvia, which happens 2-3 times a year. (They blocked off streets from Downtown LA to Venice. I didn’t even ride the whole thing, but my ass hurt for 5 days straight. Win?)

This year, I put my riding face on, but only with my riding fit on. Thus I present: streetwear, bikewear, plus heelsordie-wear. This is actually one of my favorite outfits of all time—equal parts Casual Sunday and Glamour Grunge, Rihanna Say What and Midnights in Venice.

What I’m saying is… get this belly chain. See you on the other side.

Meet my first and favorite “Everyday J.Lo” jumpsuit. If Jenny’s ever had a go-to ‘fit—for the block and beyond—it’s a jumpsuit. This one piece is as simple as simple gets, yet glam. Add all gold everything, from plated belt to gold-dipped shoes, and call it a J.Lo Day.

To upgrade your basic black and white look, start with white on the bottom. Then add a rose-gold-plated belt, complete with chain, paired with a rose gold collar. Thank you, ASOS, for supplying this new thing I’m doing. Collar, belt chain… Luxe Punk? WASP biker? (I’ll think of something.)

A rose… should come in gold, as a neck collar. Give me a bouquet of rose gold jewelry over soon-to-be wilting tokens of affection, please.

This outfit is a good gauge of my day-to-day uniform: basic, minimal, dressy; heels, slight sheerness, leather. Essentially, this is my ideal version of the modern lady—yes, her name is Elin Kling.

And the new rose gold obsession? Currently being indulged with a particular eye for unique pieces. Stay tuned…

An easy trick for dressing up a sport-casual look? Throw on the crispiest blazer you’ve got. And no, no one does a hoodie + blazer combo like 2000s Justin Timberlake, but this is me throwing my hat in the ring. Who’s mad?

When it comes to this sweater, I love the fine knit that makes for see-through – and always more interesting – layering. I also have a general, physical aversion to leggings worn as pants with short shirts, so I always go for a longer top (It’s just… polite). With the rise of athletic chic, however, I’ve taken to sporty leggings with some detail; this pair has a raised seam down the front and back. Oh, and look: the return of the white spring heels…

I always thought that my first foray into Intergalactic Print would manifest itself in a leotard, just because. But pants are a  nice and functional, alternate inaugural step. And now I’m dressed for Space Love a la JT’s 20/20 Experience ballad.
